While these appliances are incredibly durable, they are not invincible and may fall off in some cases. Here’s what can cause this as well as what to do if this happens so you can keep your smile healthy and beautiful.

Why Do Veneers Fall Off?

The process of placing veneers begins with your dentist administering a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort before removing a tiny amount of enamel from the teeth being treated. They will then cement your veneers into place to reshape your teeth and conceal defects like chips, cracks, stains, and gaps. The teeth wearing veneers will need to wear them for life for protection, and these appliances can last for up to fifteen years with excellent care. Your veneer may fall off for reasons like:

Age: The cement holding your veneer in place will degrade over time, making it more likely for the appliance to fall off.

Decay: If the enamel supporting a veneer becomes infected, the bond between the tooth and the appliance may become compromised, leading to the veneer falling off.

Damage: Facial injuries, chewing on non-food items such as pens or ice, or using your smile to open packages or bottles can damage your veneers and break them free from the teeth.

Excessive drinking: Alcohol is slightly acidic, and excessive exposure will erode the cement holding your veneers in place.

What Should I Do When My Veneer Falls Off?

While losing a veneer can be frustrating and unsettling, the issue is not typically regarded as a dental emergency and can usually wait for a few days before being addressed. However, it’s still important to contact your dentist to schedule an appointment for repairs as soon as possible after your veneer falls off. Try to find the restoration and store it in a clean, safe container so you can bring it with you to your dentist’s office. In the meantime, avoid chewing with the tooth that lost the veneer.

At your appointment, your dentist will determine if it’s best to fix your veneer back in place or replace it altogether. In either case, you can rest assured that your dentist’s recommendation is the best course of action for your appearance and your oral health.

About the Author

Dr. Dalton Hunt earned her dental degree at the University of Louisville and completed a one-year Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at UNC Chapel Hill.
